Vila Real de Santo Antonio is a municipality situated in the far Eastern corner of the Algarve with a total area of 57 km² and a population of 19,000 residents. The municipality has three civil parishes ; Monte Gordo, Vila Nova de Cacela and Vila Real de Santo Antonio.
The municipality fronts the Atlantic ocean to the south, and the Guadiana River to the east, due to its Atlantic frontage, the municipality has several kilometers of continuous sandy beaches with the eastern most part of the Ria Formosa lagoon ending here.
